What is it?
The “Kick & Roll Open Gym with George Kiel” Tour is the warm-up for our main event, the Kick & Roll Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Event, which is the biggest, sneaker-themed basketball event in the USA. It is a traveling, three-hour, 5-on-5 open run event that welcomes players from around the local areas we visit to hoop in their best footwear. Lace up, hoop for a good cause, and get a small taste of the Kick & Roll Classic on our traveling Open Gym tour.
Only under a Kick & Roll roof, whether it be the Classic or the Open Gym Tour, will you be able to see the craziest footwear on court in action.
When the “Kick & Roll Open Gym with George Kiel” Tour hits your city, a Kick & Roll Classic is sure to follow.
Why do they exist?
Our founder George Kiel (former Editor-In-Chief of NiceKicks.com and former host of the “Sneak Peek” and “Kicks On Court Weekly” Youtube video series) and the minds behind the Kiel Colon Cancer Foundation host these pickup basketball gatherings to raise awareness for colon cancer – a disease that took Kiel’s mother, encourage a healthy, active lifestyle, build a rapport within the communities we visit through cancer-themed, non-monetary donations and overall bring attention to our Kick & Roll Classic 3-on-3 Basketball Event. In addition to the $5 participant fee, each player must donate a non-monetary gift to the theme we choose for each particular event (example: we chose to donate canned goods to the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas during March, Colon Cancer Awareness Month and National Nutrition Month, for a previous Open Gym event in Austin – each player was required to bring at least one fruit or vegetable canned good to help with the cause and we ultimately collected 252 pounds of food for the aforementioned food bank). Participants find out what the themed cause is upon registration. The cancer-themed donations go to specific groups and/or entities, such as cancer clinics, community centers and health organizations that we target with each event in hopes of bettering the overall state of colon cancer within those areas.
What else happens at a “Kick & Roll Open Gym with George Kiel” Tour event?
- At the end of the event, prize packages are given to the player who hoops in the best shoe, the player who brings out the biggest bag of shoes to play in, the MVP of the day and the biggest donor to our themed cause. Various prizes serve as raffles and giveaways for everyone in attendance, whether participating or the guys and girls who simply attend to take in the action. But here’s the twist: you must be up on your colon cancer knowledge, as we’ll have various trivia questions and activations that test your education of the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths throughout the day. If you come prepared, you’re sure to walk away with something.
- Our merchandise table, featuring our most popular and highest-selling item, “Blue Knots,” will be set up and available to those who want to help us raise awareness for colon cancer.
- We have multiple photographers, videographers, emcees, DJs and sneaker judges on site to help make the experience wholesome. This is not your average open run at 24-Hour Fitness, ladies and gents.
