AUSTIN — In his first ever visit to Austin and first experience at a Kick & Roll Classic, 3X NBA Slam Dunk Champion Nate Robinson described the event as “amazingly spectacular” before hopping on a plane back to Seattle following the big day.
“Everything that it stands for totally drew me in,” said Robinson, who served as our special guest of Kick & Roll Classic 2016. “The cause; the people; the venue; the footwear – it’s just different than anything I’ve ever been a part of.”
‘Different’ is what we prided ourselves on this summer with the Kick & Roll Classic, as we incorporated new activations around the sneaker-themed tournament that is the Kick & Roll Classic.
Brand-new elements, such as Austin Kickfest’s Buy/Sell/Trade pop-show, the Priceless Moments photo booth lounge, our Kids Corner, some of Austin’s most well-known food trucks, the three-point contest and the Colon Cancer Alliance/Bayer-sponsored, inflatable, educational BIG Colon that was planted right at the entrance point of the Round Rock Sports Center, entertained attendees and participants throughout the day.
We also hosted our first ever dunk contest – in partnership with the NBDL Austin Spurs – at halftime in which Robinson judged.
As for the tournament itself, we spotted a slew of unique footwear on court, and the games were the most intense they have been in our three-year existence.
“I am extremely happy to see this grow from a basketball tournament to a full-fledged event that both participants and attendees can enjoy,” said George Kiel, President of Kiel Colon Cancer. “I’m so appreciative of everyone involved who make this a certified colon cancer awareness, family-oriented event, and I look forward to many more to come in and outside of the state.”
