A dark blue ribbon brings awareness to colon cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women in the USA. Although it is the official symbol of colon cancer awareness, we recognize the fact that people don’t walk around with a ribbon attached to their chest. We do know, however, that shoes are an essential part of our everyday walk of life (no pun intended). At the beginning of March 2014, our founder George Kiel III – also the Editor-In-Chief of NiceKicks.com – urged everyone to participate in our “Blue Knots” initiative, an annual March campaign (Colon Cancer Awareness Month) involving the integration of blue shoelaces in one’s shoes. The action aims to honor those who have been afflicted by the disease and bring worldwide consciousness to colon cancer. This past March, over 900 people supported our initiative by uploading social media photos of #BlueKnots. Even a few NBA players wore blue laces in support of our campaign.
By tying “blue knots” in our shoes – especially during the month of March – we plan to make this small but impactful gesture a universal symbol of public awareness for the disease. It is effortless to engage in the “Blue Knots” initiative because seeing that we wear shoes in every aspect of life – to exercise, to work, to attend school, to business meetings and/or to grab a quick cup of coffee. For this reason, let’s tie together and take the quick moment of integrating blue laces in our shoes as a symbol of our ongoing fight with colon cancer.
Help expand the “Blue Knots” message at a rapid pace by educating others about the meaning behind it. In the same breath, inform them about colon cancer facts.
